As the fight for talent continues across diverse sectors, HR are finding themselves in a challenging position when it comes to finding the talent they need and getting that talent into their organisations. In The HR World’s recent webinar, Right From The Start: Best practice for recruitment in a challenging market, sponsored by recruitment as a services business Day One, three experts discussed their experience and best practices in ensuring they attracted and kept great talent.

Sian Wilson, Co-Founder / Executive Director, Day One; Claire Webster, HR Director, Avantia and Fiona Mason, Chief Human Resources Officer, RDT all put forward the current scenario where employers can find themselves overwhelmed by applicants for positions. The challenge they have is to sift through these candidates efficiently and effectively to find the right option for them. While technology can be used to take out some of the grunt work, the human touch is still very much required to ensure the right people come to the right positions at the right time.

The discussion covered the full recruitment cycle from understanding the talent required to ensuring the onboarding process works for each new addition to the workforce and it was interesting to note where and how efficiencies could be found within the process.

Diversity was also very much part of the discussion with the experts keen to describe how bias can be removed from the process, whether through sifting techniques or initial selection. This is also part and parcel of an ongoing strategy to extend the talent pool being considered by employers.

The webinar is available for on demand viewing and is well worth a watch for organisations of any size and sector. It is clear that employers will continue to win competitive advantage through their recruitment strategy and as such it is important to constantly be ready to update that process and stay ahead of the game.
